At Priory Rise, we endeavour to provide our children with the best possible learning opportunities.  We strongly believe by planning high-quality Design and Technology units of work, linked to our wider curriculum, we help to inspire our children to think creatively and innovatively.  We continually strive to provide strong links between our Core and Foundation subjects, enabling children to purposely use and develop their skills within a range of different contexts.

We work hard to ensure our Design and Technology curriculum offers children the chance to develop and build upon their skills over time.  All new topics are carefully planned into each year group, allowing the children to progress and refine their skills.

Children at Priory Rise love our Design and Technology lessons and particularly enjoy the practical elements that the subject has to offer.  Children will learn the key areas of the Design and Technology curriculum including designing, making, evaluating and exploring key technical skills, as well as cooking and nutrition.  Throughout these areas, children are given the opportunity to evaluate existing products and use this knowledge to design and develop their own product.  Within this process, the children will be taught how to select the appropriate materials and shown how to use equipment safely.  They will be encouraged to refine and evaluate their ideas helping them to think critically.   

Units of Work:

Year 1 – Moving toys using axels, African Masks, exploring clay, making a healthy smoothie 

Year 2 – Structures/buildings linked to Great Fire of London learning, dream catchers, designing and making a healthy lunchbox 

Year 3 – Pop-up books, Anglo Saxon brooches, making a healthy sandwich 

Year 4 – Weather stations, sewing, designing and making a pizza 

Year 5 – Controllable Dalek, bread making 

Year 6 – Ration based baking, Robin Hood hats
